Keeping Track of the FLS Panthers!

Hi, again! This article is about Faith Nieting. She graduated 1st Lutheran in 2001. From there she went to Southside High School. She is currently a senior at Valparaiso University. Her major is in Political Science/Foreign Policy, and her minor is in French. She spent spring semester of her junior year studying in Paris, France through a cooperative program between Valparaiso and Central College Abroad. While she was there, she attended L’Institute Catholique. I got a chance to interview her about her experience at First Lutheran School and Paris!

Me: How did going to FLS help you get to Paris?

Faith: FLS definitely helped me get to Paris. My teachers taught me to have respect for other peoples and cultures, opened my eyes to the world around me, and gave me the tools I needed to be self-sufficient. First Lutheran does an excellent job of fostering a healthy curiosity in students’ minds, modeling good citizenship, and inspiring students to take initiative. I am grateful for every opportunity that FLS gave me to learn about art, history, politics, and about the power that each one of us has to change the world. Without that foundation, I would not have been able to achieve so much, both academically and personally.

Me: Which teacher at FLS inspired you the most?

Faith: The teacher that inspired me the most wasn’t really my teacher – she was my coach. Miss Borges was always really encouraging. She believed in me even when I didn’t. That kind of support will take you a long way in life. She is a positive person and always made me feel like anything was possible.

Me: What's your proudest achievement so far?

Faith: My proudest achievement would be calling to reserve a cab to the airport in Nice. I did it all by myself, without help, completely in French – it’s a lot harder than you might think. I hope that this moment will be eclipsed when I get my LSAT scores back in December

Me: What is your fondest memory from FLS?

Faith: My fondest memory of FLS would have to be the final pep-rally of my 9th grade year. The coaches made it really special for the six of us who were graduating. We had cool music to run

out to, a free-throw shoot out, and posters with our names on them. They had my class pose for

a picture and I remember thinking what a special moment it was and how much I would miss

each of them.

And, of course it wouldn’t be like me not to include an insanely quirky question so. . .

Me: Please describe your alarm clock.

Faith: I don’t really have an alarm clock. I use the alarm on my iphone and wake up to the musical stylings of Rilo Kiley’s “Portions for Foxes”.
