Q: What is a "domain registrar"? A: A domain registrar is a company or entity that maintains domain records. These records keep track of domain ownership, contact information, and other pertinent details regarding a domain. When you want to register your “dot-com,” a domain registrar is who you have to go to. When you sign up for WebPress, we’ll do this for you as part of your setup.
Q: Will I lose ownership of my domain name if I transfer it? A: No. A domain transfer simply changes the company that maintains your domain record.
Q: What is a domain transfer? A: A domain transfer is a process that changes the active domain registrar (see above) for a particular domain. This transfer process does not necessarily involve a change in ownership of the domain. However, this process does change the company that actively maintains the domain record.
Q: What is involved in the domain transfer process? A: The domain transfer process involves several steps and involves several parties.
Step 1: The process begins when the new registrar (The official domain registrar for WebPress is SRSPlus Inc.) receives a request to transfer the domain. The administrative contact for the domain will receive an e-mail from SRSPlus explaining how to approve the first stage of the transfer. After following the link provided in the authorization e-mail (or after following any other proper instructions detailed in the e-mail) the next stage in the transfer process begins.
Step 2: After SRSPlus Inc. has received confirmation of your approval, the request will be forwarded to your current registrar. All registars use a different process for approval, but it is likely that your registar will use an approval process similar to the one outlined in the previous step. If this is the case, the administrative contact will again be sent an e-mail (this time the e-mail will come from your current registrar) explaining how to approve this stage of the domain transfer. (Please note that some registrars "lock" their domains as a safety precaution for their customers. This means that all transfer requests will be automatically denied without seeking your approval. If this is the policy for your current registrar, you will need to contact them to have your domain "unlocked" before the transfer process reaches this stage.)
Step 3: After you have properly approved the domain transfer from your current registrar, SRSPlus Inc. will take over maintenence of your domain record and add a 1 year extension to your registration. At this point the transfer process is complete, and we can point your domain to your new website.
Q: What is an "Administrative Contact"? A: An administrative contact refers to the party that will be contacted regarding any decisions about your domain. Most registrars will seek approval from the administrative contact via e-mail when a domain transfer request is received. If you are NOT the administrative contact for your domain, or the e-mail address is incorrect, you must get this information changed before we can begin the transfer process. If you can not change this information manually, or do not know how, you will need to contact your registrar.
The administrative contact can be seen by doing a "Whois" lookup on a domain.
Q: What should I do if the contact information for my domain is incorrect? A: Registars have different policies regarding this situation. Please contact your current registrar to determine the proper course of action. Usually, it is best to contact the registrar by phone first, but they then may require an e-mail or fax directly from you with proof of identification. Again, different registrars have different policies.
Q: How can I determine what contact information exists for my domain? A: The current contact information for a domain can be retrieved by using a 'whois' service or from your current registrar.
Q: What is a 'whois' service? A: A 'whois' service provides contact information and other details regarding a domain. YourWebPress.com and SRSPlus provide a free whois service located here.
